Hello and thanks for a useful article on outdoor lighting. I needed some inspiration! I bought my house about 3 years ago and the Sea Gull type light over the back yard has never worked, even though I changed the bulb. It’s looking pretty ropey so I guess it’s time to replace it!

Peter,
Plenty of options for the replacement of your present fixture. These items are pretty simple, maybe check the wiring before replacement.

Love the images that you have with all of your reviews. Makes it easy to actually visualize each product. Great site and will be back!
Thanks for the comments. Most of the pics are what I have done or in my yard.

Hey John,
Awesome article! Do these lights need specific bulbs? by that I mean are they widely available in supermarkets or local stores or will I have to go hunting for them?
I am thinking of putting some security sensors by our front door as I start work at 4am and instead of turning the outdoor light on it would be much easier to have the security sensor turn on.
It would also help distract thieves as there has been a few burglaries in our town in the last few months.

Aiden,
Adding sensors for this type of light is not difficult. Some of the fixtures have fittings for adding motion or dusk to dawn sensors.
Each fixture is listed with the type of bulb it will require, some fixtures do come with the bulbs. The specialty bulbs will need to be purchased at one of the big box stores.

I am glad that I found your post as i need to find a light for outside my front door! Before reading your information, I just thought I needed something that looked good but you show me different options all that are focused on security. Your post is nicely structured and cover all points that are important to my decision. I like that you have included the bulb type that each lamp takes – I know that some bulbs can be hard to find when you need replacements so now this info can be a part of my decision. Great post, thanks.
