9 Foot Patio Umbrellas
Looking for options on getting an Umbrella for your patio. Â We will look at four completely different options in this post, maybe one will work in your outdoor space. Â Before we get started you will have to look at your space and find if the umbrellas will open without hitting some obstructions. Â Do you have trees, wires or Pergolas that will hamper the opening of your umbrella.
Mainstays Round Umbrella
The first Umbrella will be a Mainstays Round Umbrella. Â It is the more traditional table umbrella with a 1.5 inch diameter steel pole for support. Â It will tilt in three positions, straight up and to each side. Â It does not have a stop to do a partial tilt.
The Turquoise Shade is made from a fade resistant durable polyester fabric. Â It is 108.5 inches across and is 93 inches tall when standing straight up.
It has a crank for easy opening and closing.
Wooden Market Umbrella
The Wooden pole made of Birch sets this umbrella apart from the others. Â Some like the wood and some don't. Â It comes in two parts that have to be put together. Â If this pole is not taken care of it can crack or splinter in the outdoor weather.
No tilt or crank is available for this umbrella. Â It relies of a double pulley system to operate the opening and closing of the shade. Â The shade is made from a polyester material for long lasting in the outdoor environment. Â Some customers state that the material is thin and does not protect from the sun very well.
This six rib design is 108 inches across and about 96 inches tall.
9 Foot Rectangular Patio Umbrella
If you are looking for something different, one of these Rectangular Umbrellas may be what you are looking for. Â The light beige colored shade is made from an Olefin fabric that is UV resistant and will not fade.
The dark brown steel pole will be 1 1/2 inches across. Â It will come in two sections to help with storage when not in use.
The crank open shade is about 6 1/2 feet by about 9 1/2 feet.  It will be about 7 feet tall.  It will tilt forward and backwards or lock in the straight up position.  It will be about 5 feet off the ground when tilted, some people may not be able to walk under it.
Half Patio Umbrella
If you have space problems with the big umbrellas, this solution will be for you. Â The half umbrella will have a shade only on one side making it a good choice when you have limited space, you can place it against the wall. Â Some people have used this type of umbrella at a patio door, as it is cheaper than an awning. Â If you have a townhouse, apartment or condo with a balcony on the sunny side this type of umbrella will work great.
The canvas shade has five ribs and is made from a polyester material to withstand the outdoor elements. Â It is 4 1/2 feet on the short side and 9 feet on the long side. Â The flat side can sit next to your house or building. Â Just need to check the crank to make sure you have clearance to open and close the shade when needed. Â The frame and steel pole have a black painted coating.
For placement next to the wall a special half round umbrella stand will be needed. Â With the shade open, watch for wear on the wall and shade from wind movement. Â This umbrella does not have a tilt feature.

Some great ideas, we have frequent hailstorms here, which is a sturdy umbrella?
Rod,
Not many outside umbrellas will withstand a hail storm. The one with a steel post would be best. If it like around here, it would get destroyed. My truck got over $3000 worth of damage on the last storm
Find storage for when your outside stuff is not in use.

Hi John
Great post on outdoor umbrellas, I never knew the half option existed & maybe it doesn’t in Australia, but your write ups are easy to read & to the point.
I work in building & design (amongst other things) & I am also a very keen gardener, so I too am really passionate about our outdoor garden rooms.
I took the liberty of looking over the rest of your site & see you have loads of great information, relevant & colourful pics & articles.
I look forward to seeing more. Keep up the good work.
Cheers Faye 🙂
Faye,
Thanks for the comments. Do you have a version of Wal Mart down under. Several places do sell the half umbrella.

Hi John, Just stop by to say this is a very cool article. I didn’t know there are that many types of different umbrellas with different angle, shapes, color and purpose. If I have a patio, I probably will buy all of them and put them in different corners =). Anyway, I think your website is also very cool, how much time did you spend working on it?
There are several types of umbrellas, one to fit most outdoor areas. Working on umbrellas with lights now, this is something that will be used more in the future as solar powered items become more popular.
This site is over a year old and I keep adding new information weekly.

Thanks John for reviewing the different types of 9-foot outdoor table patio umbrellas. We have something very similar to the mainstay round umbrella in our yard currently (now put away for the winter) but we’re open to getting a second one some time down the road. I’ll check out your link once I have time. Thanks again.
Paul,
Thanks for looking at my post on umbrellas. When you come back, if you have any questions please drop me a line.

Hi John,
You really have good content on your site, you definitely know what you are talking about, you are a pro! I live on a tropical island and we spend lots of time outside, mainly we when have family over for lunch which will occur quite often with Christmas coming soon (we have summer Christmas holidays here). The umbrella is for us a necessity, we always use it, I have a rectangular one at home, very similar to the 9 foot rectangular one on you site. Does this model have a spefic concept name?
Fred
Fred,
It was just labeled as a 9 foot rectangular Umbrella. We do not live in a tropical are, we may use our outdoor space during Thanksgiving if the weather holds up. Having family and friends over is a great reason to have a outdoor room for entertainment and eating.

Hey Thanks for such a useful and informative post.I love this time of year, it is my absolute favourite getting ready for spring and summer. The thought of spending endless days and nights in the garden fills me with hope and joy especially after a long, dark, wet winter.
The half umbrella is a wonderful idea. I didn’t even know it existed. For even small gardens this is wonderful.
Thanks
Paula,
The half umbrella is a great idea for those who live with just a balcony. Can you imagine having shade at just the right time on the 10th floor when nobody else can use their outdoor space because of the sun.
John
I’ve been wanting to do something with my patio out back but the area I have is very small and there’s no way a large umbrella would fit on it. When I saw the half one I instantly loved it and I think it’d be perfect! I’ll have to measure the area I’m thinking of again but I think that one would be the perfect option for us. Do you know if there have been any user complaints in regards to how durable it is?
JCamden,
Get a good half umbrella stand and make sure it is not left up in windy weather or secure it to the wall with a bracket. The half umbrellas mostly sit against a wall and will catch the wind more than a regular umbrella. Other wise it is just a durable as a full umbrella.
