What would be the Best Outdoor Speaker System for you

Best Outdoor Speaker System

Looking for the Best Outdoor Speaker System for your deck or back yard?  Indoor and outdoor speakers do have different technologies.  Outdoor speakers do not have walls to bounce sound off of, if you use your indoor speakers outside you will not get the same sound quality as you would on the inside.  The ability to handle the outdoor weather, insects or other outdoor pest and sound quality are a reason to look at outdoor speakers for your patio.

If you want the sound of a outdoor water feature, but not the mess to clean and maintain, an outdoor speaker will give you this feature.  The sound can be set any where you are outside and can be hidden in your outdoor space.

Bluetooth technology is coming to the back yard.  Some sound systems will take input from Bluetooth devices.  Input devices can vary from system to system.  Some systems can hookup to you home Wi-Fi net work and stream music from the internet.

The Speaker setup for outdoors is different than that of a room with walls.  The indoor speakers are made to have the sound bounce off of the walls to make the premium sound that you hear.  Outside speakers must be built to have direct sound and it will make a difference in the quality of the sound that you hear.

Most speakers are Weather proof. They can take the heat, cold, rain and snow, they cannot take direct contact with water or be in standing water.  Wired speakers must be connected to a source of music, they do not have to have a power source.

Some sets can be painted to match your decor.  Others that look like rocks can blend in with your environment without any changes.  Some speakers can be planted in the ground with only the top showing.

Wireless or cordless speakers have a transmitter that will take inputs from 3.5 mm, Bluetooth device and RCA jacks.  This will allow you to use most of your modern devices for a music source.

Most use Bluetooth 900 MHz technology.  They can transmit 150 to 300 feet through walls and other objects.  You do not have to run speaker wire from your sound source to the speakers.

Most speakers of this type work off of a power supply or batteries.  Cordless means you will have the ability to move the speaker system anywhere in your outdoor space without having a line hooked to the music source.  You will have to have a power supply for the speakers for the receiver to work. Most have dual power of a 110 volt transformer to a lower voltage and have either rechargeable or regular battery power.

  1. Hi John,
Love the idea of wireless speakers. It is way more convenient than having to run wires and keep moving speakers to various locations in your home.

These speakers can be used inside or outside. The sound is different for outside speakers as they do not have walls to use to bounce the sound off of.

  2. Very informative article. I always use our home speaker whenever we hangout outside the house with my family. We love music but the sound really sucks. Lol. It is good to know that there are speakers designed for outdoor. I better check out one.

Probably wireless so we can place it anywhere we want to. What do you prefer?

    • Chris,

I would prefer the wireless if you have the system to support it. It will work fine in most outdoor spaces. You will have to see how far you can go with trial and error as each outdoor space will have its own problems with wireless. This is the most flexible as the wired system cannot be moved very easily.

  3. Once I upgrade my indoor system I want to put some speakers on my deck. this looks like a product that might do the trick. Question for you. Should I bring them inside when I come inside? I would be concerned about water damage. Thank for the review on this product.

    • Kirk,

I would just make sure that they did not sit in standing water. They would last longer if put inside during the time they would not be used outdoors.

  4. This is a good product to consider. Very mobile and handy! So flexible too, I like that feature of weatherproof, whatever season it can withstand heat, rain, snow and you can embed in the ground showing only the top. The direct sound distribution is what makes it different with indoor speakers too!
This product s really great for outdoors and worth recommending!

There is a great difference in outdoor speakers. You have to get the correct speakers or your sound will just go off into space. The outdoor speakers let the sound stay in the area of the speakers for the best sound.

  5. Hi John, I really enjoyed your article. I am going to be looking for a set of speakers to put in our backyard (not a real big yard). I’m curious, is there a particular brand that you feel to be than the others, or would it be basically the same top manufactures for indoor speakers also produce the best outdoor speakers?

    • Kevin,

Very few make the speakers for outdoors. The sound is so different that the indoor people and outdoor people are different. The Acoustics of not having walls to bounce the sound off of is the difference.

  6. Wonderfully thorough review! I’d never even though of an outdoor speaker system, but having a little bit about them, I really feel that its a luxury worth investing in. Thanks to you, I’m not going in blind, and I have a good idea about what I’m after having read about all the different features and types to look out for. Thank you!

    • Aisha,

The acoustics of an outdoor speaker will make it well worth your time and money to get the correct type of speaker. Indoor speakers can be used outdoors, the sound will not be the best, you will think something is wrong with your system.

  7. Hi John,

When I read that some sound systems can be painted to match the environment, I thought of a security consideration. If someone was in your outside space and you had sound hooked up, you could play some interesting sounds to persuade them to leave.

Just a random thought on a rainy Sunday evening when I was persuaded to stay indoors. 🙂

    Cheers,

This would be a useful tool for some people. Many people will just paint them a crazy color to make them a highlight of their outdoor space.

  8. Hi John,

I liked the idea of having an outdoor speaker system that blend in with my decor!

And the fact that you could use wireless speaker system is even better since you don’t have the hassle of dealing with wires.

With the outdoor wireless sound system, you mentioned that you can use batteries to power your speakers, how long will the batteries last?

Also, I would like to know about the sound quality? Is it good?

Which types of speakers do you recommend, the wired or wireless speakers?

    Thanks

    • Sonia,

The big difference in outdoor speakers is the direct sound, it does not depend on walls to make the sound better. The sound is as good as indoor or better.

Wired or wireless depends on the area that the speakers are to be used. I would recommend using the wired method, it is preferred method. Wireless would be for the people who have a remote speaker setup.

The battery powered speakers will not last very long, this is for the remotest locations. If you were camping and wanted concert type music, these would be the speakers I would choose. Otherwise have them hooked up to an electric source for uninterrupted music.

  9. Hi John, I have been reading about these outdoor speaker here with growing interest. At first I was thinking that the wireless speaker would be the best, as wired speakers are rather limited for moving around and you always have a wire to snag you. But then you pointed out that the wireless speaker requires power, so not really wireless. The other thing with wireless is that batteries don’t last forever.
You have the assurance of always being connected using wired speakers, and getting the speaker cable to the source is easier than getting power to the speaker and, I think, safer?

    • John,
As always thanks for reading and commenting. The Completely wireless speakers do have some battery problems. I would rather find an electric source and use the blue tooth speakers as the power is much more of a problem than the sound source, as you can use a USB drive or any cell phone for a music source. The electric source can be run underground and be kept from site.
